Beyond the Chocolate Bar: How to Handle Temptation God's Way
We've all been there. Standing in front of the open refrigerator door, staring at that chocolate bar positioned perfectly at eye level, whispering "eat me" every single time. Pastor Saz's recent message at Courageous Church used this relatable scenario to tackle one of life's most pressing questions: "How do I handle temptation?"
God's Design: Abundance with Boundaries
The story begins in Genesis, where God created a world of incredible abundance. He gave Adam and Eve access to every tree in the garden except one. This wasn't limitation—it was love. Just as a parent protects their child from harmful choices, God establishes boundaries not to restrict our joy, but to protect our wellbeing.
"God isn't a limiting God," Pastor Saz explained. "He's given us an abundance of good choices." The problem isn't that we don't have options; it's that we often fixate on the one thing we're told to avoid, forgetting the countless good choices available to us.
Five Strategies for Victory
Pastor Saz outlined five practical steps for overcoming temptation, each beginning with the letter "C":
Be Careful of thinking you're above temptation. Pride comes before a fall, and the enemy often strikes when we're feeling most confident in our spiritual strength.
Come Near to God when facing temptation. Draw close through worship music, prayer, and declaring God's truth over the enemy's lies. "Devil, you're a liar" becomes a powerful weapon in moments of weakness.
Cut It Off by physically removing what causes you to sin. This might mean installing accountability software, changing your Friday night routine, or removing apps from your phone. Sometimes radical action is required for lasting change.
Confess to trusted Christian friends or mentors. Community is essential for overcoming persistent struggles. What we keep in secret stays in secret, but confession brings healing and accountability.
Conquer through God's strength, remembering His promise that no temptation will overcome you beyond what you can bear. God always provides a way out.
The Root Behind the Fruit
Often, our surface-level sins mask deeper heart issues. Pastor Saz shared how his chocolate cravings weren't really about taste—they were about seeking comfort when feeling inadequate. True freedom comes when we address not just the behavior, but the underlying needs driving that behavior.
Nothing Can Separate You
Perhaps the most powerful part of the message was the reminder from Romans 8: nothing can separate us from God's love. No matter what you've done, how long you've struggled, or how many times you've failed, God's forgiveness is complete and His strength is available.
Moving Forward
Temptation isn't a sign of spiritual failure—it's common to all humanity. The key is remembering that you're not fighting alone. Through God's strength, community support, and practical steps, victory is possible.
As Pastor Saz concluded, "You are more than a conqueror through Christ who loves you." That chocolate bar in the fridge doesn't have to control you. Whatever your temptation, God has provided everything you need to overcome it.
The choice is yours. Choose freedom.
